Herbert Clark Hoover was born in Iowa in 1874 and grew up in Oregon. He enrolled at Stanford University when it opened in 1891, graduating as a mining engineer. During WWI, President Wilson appointed Hoover head of the Food Administration. He was successful in cutting consumption of foods needed overseas and avoided rationing at home. Meanwhile, he always kept the Allies fed. After serving as Secretary of Commerce under President Harding and President Coolidge, Herbert Hoover became the Republican Presidential nominee in 1928. He would soon win the upcoming election. Hoover once said: "We in America today are nearer to the final triumph over poverty than ever before in the history of any land." I chose to research Herbert Hoover because I feel as though he saw and experienced America from many different points of view - the leader of a food administration during a world war, the Secretary of Commerce under two presidents, president of the United States, and even more. He understood what different classes of Americans were going through, which made his relevance to the period very important.
